Something to Smile About

It's our neighbourhood's turn to have its kerbside rubbish pick-up, and suddenly our street is a parade of sofas with the bottoms dropped out, disintegrating outdoor settings and...abandoned pedestal fans. Tons of 'em. Whither the humble blades, we're all air-conditioned now. Look out at two in the morning and it's quite creepy, like we're being watched over by a row of overgrown sunflowers. Walking home from a job at the uni this morning, though, it was quite cheerful - as I came down the hill all the blades were turning in the breeze like an underwatered wind farm.

Sounds beautiful!

At least you didn't stop for years marvelling at them turning in the breeze and swayed with them...

We didn't even get a notice, so I just put our stuff on the lawn anyway - and it was gone by the end of the day! That was the last part of the old Skyline...

Walking down some of the streets, you could build a whole house almost. One street had a bathtub, sink, toilet and oven - in front of different houses - as well as the aforementioned sofas and fans. I wonder where it all goes...

Some of it gets stolen by your neighbours :) We scored a very nice potplant stand indeed from next door's pile (I nicked out early in the morning to relieve them of it) which has finally taken care of the confusion of shoes on our patio. And if you look carefully at sundown you'll see the twilight crews doing the rounds with their trailers! One man's trash etc etc.

Oh, yes.

We scored a couch from accross the road.... Throw a blanket over it, and you've got yourself a new suite. :-)

Last time they had one of these, our stuff didn't stay for an hour. Most of it was taken by a guy from accross the road as I was putting it out on the footpath (different one to the couch - or that would have been weird). I wasn't sure if I should help him carry it to his house or what. Then as I put a particuarly ugly and broken office type chair out, a car just pulled over and these people jumped out, stashed it in the back seat and zoomed off! It was like something out of a Tom Clancy novel.
